Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service
(RACES)
The Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES)
is a public service provided by a reserve (volunteer) communications group
within government agencies in times of extraordinary need. During periods of
RACES activation, certified unpaid personnel are called upon to perform many
tasks for the government agencies they serve. Although the exact nature of each
activation will be different, the common thread is communications.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
provides planning guidance and technical assistance for establishing a RACES
organization at the state and local government level. A comprehensive RACES
manual, Guidance for Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service, is available
on the FEMA Web site
http://www.fema.gov/library/civilpg.shtm.
Traditional RACES operations involve emergency
message handling on Amateur Radio Service frequencies. These operations
typically involve messages between critical locations such as hospitals,
emergency services, emergency shelters, and any other locations where
communication is needed. RACES groups develop
and maintain their communications ability by training throughout the year with
special exercises and public-service events.
To join RACES and to be able to
participate in RACES and other government emergency communications activities,
contact your local, county, or state RACES Radio Officer or
Coordinator.

The Amateur Radio Club Licensing Examinations
The
Voice of Idaho
ARC
conducts FCC Amateur Radio Licensing Examinations on the first Saturday of each
month from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the Radio Shack on Overland Rd in Boise.
These exams are open to the public and no reservations are required. We'll be in
the meeting room around back. You can enter through the door on the side of the
building. We're down the hall, first door on the left. If you can't find us,
just enter the store and ask them to point you in the right direction.
On very rare occasions
Radio Shack may need the room for something other than our exams and a last
minute move to an alternate location may be necessary. If you know in advance
that you will be testing with us we recommend that you check in with our
Communications Director and let him know that you will be coming. He will call
you with directions to the alternate location if a last minute move is
necessary.
