Lemhi County has two incorporated communities: Leadore (pop. 90), and Salmon (3,122). The total population for the county in 2000 was 7,806. That is an increase of 13% since 1990.
Land Area: 4,571square miles. Established January 9, 1869 with its county seat at Salmon. Named for Fort Lemhi, the L.D.S. Salmon River Mission, which was named for King Lemhi in the book of Mormon. Lewis and Clark were the first white men in this area. County Seat: Salmon
Wildland Fire - 8-9/2000 Event Summary: $1,000,000,000.00 - Over 1,541 fires burned in Idaho in 2000, scorching over 7 million acres. A federal disaster declaration was declared on September 1, 2000 . Several times DEQ issued air quality advisories due to intense smoke; air cleaners and fans were sent to Salmon on August 21, 2000 . Over 3 million acres of public and state lands were closed, including more than 2,000 miles of trails, 80 miles of river, and nearly all public airstrips. The Salmon River was closed for 26 days, affecting 4,000 outfitter floaters, 2300 private floaters, and 140 commercial jet boaters, resulting in lost income and employment for local communities. 13 fires caused evacuations of 14-16 locations, 109 structures were destroyed. Critical wildlife habitat was destroyed. County Summary: $59,000,000.00 - The Clear Creek Fire near Salmon cost over $59 million to fight and burned over 216,000 acres. There were huge losses of old ponderosa pines in this area that may not grow back without an extensive reseeding program. Idaho Statesman 22 Sept 00 Landslide - 5/1998 Event Summary: landslides in Lemhi and Nez Perce counties. County Summary: Flood - 8/5/1991 Event Summary: Torrential rainstorms scoured three tributaries along the Salmon River canyon in Central Idaho , killing unknown numbers of trout. County Summary: Roads and trails were washed out. 10 residents in Krilley Gulch between North Fork and Salmon were trapped by the flooding. Fish were washed into the Main Salmon River. Severe Weather: 1/6-2/5/89 Event Summary: A blizzard ripped through eastern Idaho blocking several highways, closing schools, and prompting avalanche warnings. Severe winds and blizzard conditions kept ranchers from reaching livestock resulting in great losses. County Summary: Severe winter prompted a disaster declaration from livestock losses resulting from the severe storm in January and February. County Summary: Severe winds and blizzard conditions kept ranchers from reaching livestock Idaho Statesman 1 April 89 Wildland Fire - 8/1986 Event Summary: Wildfires throughout the state resulted in a state-wide disaster declaration on 8/12/86 . Most of the fires were results of a lightning storm 8/10/86 . County Summary: Lightning started the Grizzly Fire in the Salmon National Forest . The Idaho Statesman 7 April 85 ; 16 Jan 86 Flood - Salmon Ice Jam of '84 - 1/1984 (Report) Event Summary: $1,800,000.00 - Ice Jam of the Lemhi and Salmon Rivers caused flooding in Salmon. The ice-jam flooding from the Lemhi River was a type of event that reoccurs periodically along river areas in extended, very cold periods. This ice-jam flood at and near the central Idaho town of Salmon was typical in that it was accompanied by nighttime Fahrenheit temperatures averaging 20 degrees below zero and the warmest daytime temperature of near zero. Colder temperatures occurred upstream. Daylight was limited to about nine hours. The US Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District determined this to be a 100-year flood. report from Dept of Water Resources 1985., Earthquake - Borah Peak Earthquake - 10/28/1983 Event Summary: $12,500,000.00 - 7.3 earthquake was centered between Challis and Mackay at the old town site known as Chilly. 8 states and 3 Canadian provinces felt the quake. Damage occurred up to 75 miles from the quake. Sewer lines were broken, wells were contaminated, roads were cracked, several large buildings had to be demolished, and nearly 700,000 hatchery fish were killed. County Summary: Felt the quake. Brought rock tumbling onto the highway. The Idaho Statesman 1 Oct 89; 6 Nov 83 , The Recorder-Herald 3 Nov 83 Flood - 2/1982 Event Summary: $1,000,000.00 - Ice Jam caused serious flooding in the town of Salmon . The ice jam extended from Deadwater to above Salmon, over 30 miles. County Summary: $1,000,000.00 - Basements and facilities were covered with about 18 inches of water after the Salmon River left its banks after a massive ice jam clogged the normal channel. report from Dept of Water Resources 1985., Wildland Fire - 7/27-8/24/1967 Event Summary: $18,500,000.00 - A state of emergency was declared because of fires, closing range and forest land north of the Salmon River to the public. The Idaho National Guard was dispatched to aid the fire fighters. Fires were burning throughout the Coeur d'Alene, Nez Perce, and St. Joe National Forests. 70,000-80,000 acres were burned. Wind gusts were up to 60 miles per hour. 2 fire fighters died in the blaze. "Deficit spending" was allowed to cover the costs of firefighting. County Summary: Several acres were blackened near Salmon from a lightning strike. 165 men were needed to put out the blaze, along with 8 air tankers. Lewiston Morning Tribune 10 Aug 67 Earthquake - The Hebgen Lake Earthquake - 8/17/1959 Event Summary: Quake in Hebgen Lake , MT The magnitude 7.1 earthquake at Hebgen Lake , Montana , on August 17, 1959 , which killed 28 people, formed "Quake Lake ," and did $11 million damage to roads and timber, also caused some damage in Idaho . Intensity VII was experienced in the Henry's Lake , Big Springs, and Island Park areas. Big Springs increased its flow 15 percent and became rusty red colored. A man was knocked down at Edward's Lodge. There was considerable damage to building in the Henry's Lake area. Trees swayed violently, breaking some roots, and cars jumped up and down. Chimneys fell and a 7-foot-thick rock-and-concrete dock cracked. County Summary: Furniture jiggled and hanging objects swayed as the shock waves rippled visibly across the floors in homes and buildings of Salmon. Little or no damage was reported in Lemhi County . The Recorder-Herald 20 Aug 59 Flood - 5/29/1956 Event Summary: Flooding of the Upper Snake River and Salmon Rivers . County Summary: US 93 was washed out about 23 miles south of Salmon from a surging Salmon River . Lewiston Morning Tribune 30 May 56 Flood - 5/23-6/5/1948 Event Summary: The 1948 flood was caused by abnormal snowmelt augmented by rainstorms the latter part of May and in June. The floods caused contamination of the water system, which left residents without drinking water. Over $3,700,000 damage to roads and highways. $30 Million damage to crops. County Summary: Highway 93 was closed between Salmon and Missoula , MT from a 5 mile washout. 1 man drowned in the swollen waters of Williams Creek . The Lemhi River took out 4 bridges.
