Emergency Alert System (EAS)

The Emergency Alert System is the replacement warning system for the Cold War era Emergency Broadcast System.  The Bureau of Homeland Security administers the state's Emergency Alert System using a network of state-owned mountaintop repeaters to broadcast warnings to the general public over commercial broadcast radio, television and cable systems.  Although commercial broadcasters are required to have a warning system in place to provide warnings from the federal government, commercial broadcast stations are not required to provide this service to state and local governments.  Therefore, the emergency warning services that commercial broadcasters provide to the general public are purely voluntary.
